CHAPTER 6

'STREET', 'GOLD' AND 'ENGLAND'S CAPITAL' ARE ALL IN THIS FOR YOU HERE

3/5

THE IDIOT:
I personally think there’s no concealing
The fact that gold’s a good deal more appealing
To the eye than stone or brick. Furthermore,
There’s something else by which we should set store:
Gold is longer lasting, less prone to wear...

MISS BALL:
Now wait a second. Just stop right there.
Don’t tell me that we’re choosing to dispense
With reason, or with basic common sense.
The whole idea is dubious at best,
As anybody rational must attest.

MRS COOPER:
’Tis more than dubious; ’tis quite absurd,
The stupidest idea I’ve ever heard.
I cannot for the life of me conceive
How anyone could see fit to believe
This fairy story, this prepost’rous tale,
This groundless work of fiction...

MR COOPER:
And I fail
To understand what’s wrong with the idea;
You must agree that everybody here
Would recognise that London is much richer
Than any one of us could ever picture.
Folk flock to it, attracted by its bounty,
From everywhere –yes, even from this county.

THE IDIOT:
Quite right. We all know London is a town
That merits international renown.
It is a global city; vessels come
From every far-flung port in Christendom
And beyond, bearing rare, exotic goods,
Their holds packed full with spices, teas and woods.
And, in return, for our part, we export
Metal and textile wares of every sort;
Not for nothing do many choose to call
The town of London greatest of them all.
