Monday February 5th
Resurrection, 3 stages: 1) Exhumation; 2) Incantation; 3) Reanimation.
GB & HD carry out stage 1 between 1–2 a.m. Graves chosen at random. F from C19; M C14. Sbjcts’ bones unearthed, placed on 2 white sheets, skeleton on each. Witch performs magic act; sbjcts successfully returned to healthy physical state; sedated; conveyed to experiment HQ, put to bed.
Tuesday February 6th
Sbjcts undergo basic physical tests; measured for clothes. By modern standards both below av. height for age/gender, underweight for height. Hearing good in both. F short-sighted but M has good vision. HD & GB interview sbjcts. Communication hard (language differences), but not imposs. HD overjoyed to hear ‘Gt Vwl Shft’ evidence. ‘It’s strange,’ he confesses later. ‘They speak English like foreigners, but not like ones from any discernible country.’ F seamstress, m. to fusilier killed in Crimea, no chn; M thatcher, survived by wife, housewife. Cause of sbjcts’ death uncertain. F’s definitely smallpox; M’s poss. ergotism.
BM buys sbjcts clothes. Must be comfortable, not draw attention. No jerkins, corsets, etc.
Wednesday February 7th
Intro to modern life (1)
Sbjcts have noticed world much changed since their death. We explain electricity, v. simple terms, demonstrate how electric light turned on/off at flick of switch. Sbjcts copy; fascinated. Hard to make them stop, but they do on seeing GB’s digital camera. Both astonished, ask how it works. This 1st time M has seen in detail what he looks like. Discussion. BM states camera’s economic benefit. Even for 10 pics, cost of equivalent no. similar-sized paintings at, say, £50 each = £500. Sbjcts unfamiliar with modern currency; BM outlines decimal system, gives prices of bread, houses, etc., & av. wage for comparison.
P.m.: Walk thru’ village. Sbjcts think houses big. M asks about lord of manor. End of feudal system revealed. Manor house still exists, but all modern dwellings here mansions comp. to M’s wattle-&-daub hovel. F pleased thatch still popular.
